Advice on Mariner Outboards and Mercury Verados
by Johnny Routledge
Breaking in New Mariner Outboards
Breaking in an engine properly is one of the keys to long engine life. Getting it wrong can cause hidden damage to piston rings, crankshafts, and bearings. Gears and bearings can be chipped or burred. All manufacturers have a recommended procedure that must be followed to ensure warranty coverage of their engines.
The damage caused can cause problems that may not show up on outboard motors until after the warranty period is over... ouch! expensive! The best advice is to follow manufacturer's recommendations or, in the case of a newly overhauled engine, the directions provided by the rebuilder.
To provide you with a standard checklist is difficult, because recommendations vary from one manufacturer to another. The acceleration and superior top speed available from the Mariner Optimax range or the Supercharged Four Stroke Verados must be safeguarded early in the life of the engines.
Guidelines for breaking in Mariner outboards.
Be certain that the fuel used meets minimum octane requirements as specified in the manual. Most mamanufacturers require at least "regular", with a minimum "69 RON" internationally. The main issue is not octane, but the blending of alcohol in the fuel. Alcohol in outboard fuel has become a problem, affecting smooth running.
Newer engines do now use components modified to withstand alcohol exposure.
Fuel additives and fuel conditioners need also to be manufacturer recommended.
Two-stroke outboard engines get lubrication exclusively from the mixture of fuel and oil, and you don't want to interfere with this chemical process. Grades of engine oil affect excess carbon buildup on piston and rings, leading to failure. Deposits of carbon are directly attributable to less-than-perfect fuel and oil mixtures. Mix ratio when breaking in an engine should contain double the ratio of oil to fuel than that used afterwards.
